Lye soaps are not what they used to be. If a lye soap burns the skin then it is what we call "lye heavy". We now have access to precise lye calculators which help us determine how much lye it will take to saponify the oils leaving some oil left over called "superfat". This ensures there is no lye left in the mixture and the 5-10% of oil leftover helps condition your skin.
